Wesley Willis (1963-2003) was a musician from Chicago, known for his unique Outsider style, often singing over auto-accompaniment on his keyboard. His songs featured bizarre, humorous, and sometimes absurd lyrics, often addressing themes like mental illness and consumerism. He gained a cult following in the 1990s and had a contract with American Records.
Willis was also a self-taught artist, known for his intricate and vibrant drawings of cityscapes, particularly those depicting public transportation. His drawings were typically done with colorful markers and focused on Chicago's buildings, buses, and trains. He sold his artwork on the streets of Chicago, and his works are sought after by collectors. A lovely documentary film called "Wesley Willis's Joy Rides" explores his unique artistic style, his battle with schizophrenia, and his impact on the outsider art and music scene, offering insights into his unique perspective and creative process. Willis often described his experiences, both positive and negative, using the terms "joyrides" and "hellrides," respectively.
Lindsey Kuhn started making flyers in high school for local punk shows and skate contests in Mississippi. A short time later he started working for Debbie Jacobson of L'imagerie Gallery where he printed posters for Frank Kozik, Robert Williams, Robert Crumb and many more. By 1991 Kuhn was printing his own artwork as well. in 1992 he started working with ArtRock Gallery until 1994 when he formed his own business called SWAMP Co, which grew into a silk-screening empire!
