“An entire painting exists beneath the bricks. The work started with free flow ideas laid out, much like automatic writing. I allowed myself to paint anything that crossed my mind - masks, birds, words, praises, symbols, chaos in the form of spontaneous marks and streams of color. The chaotic outcome was fabulous but not a painting yet. Realizing this was my mental landscape, thoughts running amok, I walled them in with bricks and immediately felt a sense of empowerment after doing s . I use flowers often as a symbol for renewal and joy. These non-specific flowers are passing through this mental landscape showing that there is always hope for the mind to find a resting place at last.
Erin Lofton (b. 1964) is a visionary American artist in a unique genre. Her sensual expressionistic paintings are interpretations and explorations of beauty and chaos, dreams and visions. The work explores themes of Nature, Mysticism, and Romance.
Lofton was born and raised in the Hyde Park Historic District of Chicago. During the 1980s, she studied fashion design, painting, and sculpture at Otis Art Institute and Parsons School of Design. After college, she spent a decade traveling on a solo journey, and living in magical destinations like Mount Shasta, Maui, Sedona, Vermont, and high in the Sierra Nevada. Her art was deeply transformed by these experiences.
